Beach life in the south of Gran Canaria

You want that beach, you crave that beach and you deserve that beach, and in Gran Canaria, you are going to get it. Although there is a wide selection of coastal delights all around the shores of Gran Canaria, the biggest concentration is in the south, so grab your flip flops and let’s get some sand between our toes.

Starting in the south west corner we have Mogan, a modern resort built around the dual attractions of the beach and the harbour. Playa Mogan started as a small village and although the shops and nightlife have grown, the old character has remained with narrow passages and small houses clinging to the steep cliff. Puerto de Mogan is known as the Venice of the Canaries due to it’s jumble of waterways feeding the port. If your into yachting, diving, snorkelling or just lazing, this is for you. Fish restaurants are a speciality here and a good place to eat after a few hours on the beach, protected by a rocky arm for perfect safe swimming. If you want to know about the weather in technical detail, try www.internetmogan.com there’s enough weather stats here to keep a whole bevy of weather girls happy.

Moving down the coast we come to Puerto Rico, carved into the steep hillside and a shoppers paradise. The beach is smaller and more intimate but very popular as the natural curve of the resort makes it a real suntrap. Roads zig zag down from the top of the resort and can mean a lot of walking but there are short cuts through the series of stairways installed by the council or a taxi anywhere in the resort will only set you back a few euros. Despite the smaller size of the resort, there are 3 big commercial centres to explore.

At the southern tip of Gran Canaria we find Maspalomas, one of the most spectacular beaches in the Canaries. A huge open stretch of fine white sand and big rolling waves are the main attraction but there is a lot more. Walk up the back of the beach and you will be in the undulating sand dunes that make up the national park. In between the crests of sand you may find a surprise or 2 , nudists, this is a very popular area for communing with nature. Feel free to throw caution and your clothes to the wind, but don’t forget the sun oil, it just doesn’t bear thinking about!

To the west of the Maspalomas lighthouse is the new area of Meloneras, dedicated to fine food and shopping. Just inland there is a selection of theme parks, Aquasur - water park, Sioux City – wild west town, Palmitos Park – birds, butterflies and orchids and Mundo Aborigen – recreating the land of the original aborigines.

Just along to the east is Playa del Ingles, another large sprawling beach backed by a huge selection of bars and entertainment that caters for the wild and fun loving. What you see here is what you get, fast food, drinking, eating and dancing. The Yumbo centre is a magnet for the party crowd and next door is the Kasbah, where you will find more clothes and souvenirs.

Between and beyond these resorts are plenty of smaller beaches and it’s easy to find what’s best for you. Culture, history and tradition await your pleasure across the rest of the island, but if you just want sun, sea and sand, you wont find Gran Canaria wanting.
